The Israel-Hamas war is now well inside the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, the last big stronghold of Hamas, and an evacuation of over a million Palestinian civilians coincided with this latest operation. The Houthis continue drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea region, interrupting global trade. The possibility of an Israel-Hezbollah war exploding looms large as Gaza looks to wrap up, with the potential to destroy the precarious socio-economic fabric of Lebanon. The war in Ukraine is at a key juncture, with vital US aid finally arriving. A major Russian thrust into Kharkiv has been blocked with Western weapons being allowed to strike in Russian territory, and the war moving into a new phase. The nations of Europe are increasingly stepping up their contributions, with a broad consensus that defeating Russia in Ukraine is now essential for NATO. Elsewhere, tensions are increasing in the South China Sea as the PRC provokes its neighbors through aggressive actions on the water and in the air, and the Sudan civil war continues to devolve while gang-controlled Haiti awaits a peacekeeping force from Africa. Venezuela still builds up forces in what may become an invasion of Guyana. In short, the world of mid-2024 has grown increasingly unstable, with dramatic implications for international trade, global supply chains, and finance. Hal Kempfer will unpack all of these with not just what is happening, but what it means to business, critical infrastructure, and our national security.
